Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative side as a child due to her aunt Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay instantly became enthralled with that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through experience that art can be a powerful vehicle to engage in political activism. DuVernay's mother also had the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself through the medium of art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father was for many generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English and African American studies. When she was studying, DuVernay became interested in producing for broadcast journalism. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home for a specific juror. The duties she was required to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue journalism, she shifted into the industry of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in small production studios right after she graduated from school. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has also launched lifestyle networks as well as advertising campaigns such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
